Hydrogen Gas Lab Essay Example for Free
Hydrogen Gas Lab Essay* For the mass, an uncertainty of0.01g was used, as the uncertainty was declargond on the weighing machine.* For the mickle, an uncertainty of0.05mL was used, as it was half the smallest increment on the graduated cylinder.* For the temperature, an uncertainty of0.5 was used, as it was half the smallest increment on the thermometer.Sample calculationConverting mL to LData ProcessingMagnesium+HCl Reaction-Finding the molar volume at STP of henry bollix up when HCl is reacted with atomic number 12. Ideally it should be 22.4L/mol according to the ideal gas laws. There is a percent difference of 15% between the two values. But if uncertainties are considered the percent difference is reduced to 2%. This is an acceptable value because the actual value of 22.4L/mol is an approximation in ideal conditions according to the ideal gas laws. The ideal gas laws dont take into consideration the attractive forces between atoms, or the volume of the atoms. And most likely if those factors were considered wherefore the percent difference would be 0%.For the second part of the experiment it was experimentally found using the ideal gas laws that the molar mass of zinc is 124 g/mol. When compared with the actual value of 65g/mol, thither is a percent difference of 90%. And even if uncertainties are considered, the percent difference is only reduced to 64%. This is too big therefore the info is rendered unreliable. There were quite a fe w weaknesses and limitations in this research lab. introductory of all the volume of H2O mixed in with the H2 gas was not considered. Had it been considered, then the volume found at STP would have been lower, and it would give a much accurate measurement to what the experimental value is. Another weakness in this lab was the fact that the molar mass of zinc was twice as big as its accepted value. The most likely reason for this is that when the zinc reacted, it is likely that whatsoever of the hydrogen gas was not in the beaker, but the hydrogen gas escaped into the air. That is why when the formula n=PV/RT was used, the volume in the numerator was half as big as it should be, which in turn caused the calculated molar mass to double. So it peck be assumed that approximately half the hydrogen gas escaped into the air. Another weakness was the fact that the apparatus was left over night, and so if there was a microscopic hole or crack, then the chances of the hydrogen escaping is very high. This would be on-key because, and since hydrogen has the lowest molar mass of all the elements, it would have a very high velocity, and so it is possible that the hydrogen gas was able to escape through a microscopic hole at a fast rate because it has such a high velocity. non only that, but since it was left overnight, it would have had more time to escape the beaker. There are a number of ways that this lab could be improved. First of all, a new graduated cylinder should be used to ensure that there are no cracks or holes through which the hydrogen gas can escape. Along with that the apparatus should not be left out overnight, but instead the reaction should be speeded up by heating up the apparatus, and then taking the measurements of the volume of gas every 1 minute. This in turn would decrease the amount of energy lost to the environment, and it would end up giving more accurate results.Next time, the volume of should also be considered. A percentage value can be us ed, since we know the pressure that gives, that pressure can be converted into a percent, and multiplies by the total volume, and then inversed. This in turn will in turn give the volume of .This will hold true because V=nRT/P, so pressure and volume are inversely proportional, and since nRT is a constant V and P have to change accordingly.

Theories of Food Choice Influences
Theories of Food Choice InfluencesFood is essential for growth and bodily functions (Wahlqvist and Briggs, 2010). Therefore, in this write up, theories that influences sustenance for thought choices will be discussed and applied to my food choices. Lastly, this paper will conclude on my understanding on others food practices and what transmits can improve their food choices.Based on the food choice model, the first strength that influences ones food choice is developmental. Food choices are often developed and influenced through characterization over the individuals developmental lifespan. From the child is born, his family would be the primary medium for his exposure and socialization to the food that he consumes. Usually, the food consumed would belong to the culture which the child family stemmed from. Rarely would the child be allowed autonomy over the choice of food. (Fieldhouse, 1998).Applying this to an Asian context which I was born in since young, I was unfastened to Chinese cultural foods where lard, soy sauce, sugar and table salt was often used to enhance the flavour and fragrance of meals. I was used to eating these daily and never would return thought I would be exposed to other food choices. This exposure came when I progressed into adolescence where a secondary type of socialisation took place school, media, friends or an older sibling. When a child enters school, and gets exposed to friends and the media, they will observe what their peers consume and get exposed to food advertisements on the media, all which grabs their attention and leads them to change in their food habits (Fieldhouse, 1998 Ogden, 2010). Remembering vividly back to high school, if my peers or elder sister uniform a meal, I would order the same meal as them due to my perception that they know what food tasted better. In addition, when shown food advertisements, it often provokes me crave a bite. The second medium is our cognition. Based on the Theory of Reasoned A ction (Ogden, 2010, p44), it posits that an individuals attitude and his subjective norms drives his intention to perform the behaviour which then leads to the individual performing the behaviour.Again, applying it to Chinese cuisine, it is the subjective norm that one should use all parts of the animal (e.g. chicken)-including the organs- during cooking as they have nutritional values. Therefore, I feel it is everyday to cook every part of the chicken (attitude towards behaviour). Given that a whole chicken can be conveniently bought at any supermarket, I would plough the various parts into different dishes for my family (performing of specific behaviour). Despite, knowing that animal organs for example are high in stark(a) fat and can driving heart diseases (Jesus, 2015).The third medium is psychophysiological. Food choices can be based on the 5 senses kettle of fish, smell, taste, hearing and touch. (Ogden, 2010) Hearing food sizzling, coupled with the smell and sight increa ses our likelihood of consuming the food. When food touches the tongue, pleasure is obtained from the texture, perceived sweetness or saltiness of food. Food choices can besides be influenced by ones mood and stress. (Ogden, 2010) Personally, uttermost(prenominal) stressors from school would cause me to engage in mindless eating as a mood booster.Convenience is defined as the availability to food products. afterwards living in different countries, it got me appreciating how different countries have different accesses to food products. For countries with supermarkets conveniently located near train stations, it is easy for the residents to get a round-eyed array of food choices. This is unlike countries where supermarkets are scarce with limited food choices.Cost can also influence food choices. It is of relevance to the individual socio-economic stipulation with more access to money, one can made more food choices. But, being a student with no source of income, I must be thrif ty and limit my choices.Food choices can also affect how one manages their relationship with others. Given that most of my peers and family love fried food, I would cook them frequently to satisfy their taste buds. By doing so, I am bonding with them even though I know that it is un bouncing. After understanding the influences in my food choices, the basic principle of the theory of planned behaviour (Ogden, 2010, p45) could be used to explain how my choices changed. During a lecture, I learnt that consuming healthy food would improve ones health (i.e. fitter weight, confident(p) mind set, decrease in blood pressure and cholesterol level) and reduces the likelihood of developing chronic diseases. With so many health benefits, this has motivated and drive me to make the change. Based on the theory, I am showing a change in my attitude towards the behaviour (i.e. a healthy lifestyle). This change towards a healthier food choice was further made easy through the context that I am in. Having peers that were studying the same course who hold similar goals to have a healthy diet -, it thus seems like a subjective norm to have healthier food choices. I am also successful to have housemates that are supportive to my changes.Making the move here to Adelaide alone had also given me full control over food choices. To start the change of food choices, one needs to have adequate knowledge. Through my research on the healthy eating guidelines, I have learned to consume a wide range of reduced fat dairy products, vegetables, fruits, wholegrains, lean meats, have ample of plain water and reduce consumption of foods high in saturated fat, salt and sugar. (Commonwealth of Australia, 2015)A second change that I made was through how I did my grocery shopping. Prior to purchasing any food, I would read the ratings and food labels. As healthier products are costlier, I would purchase unobjectionable vegetables and healthy products that are on offer to reduce my expenditure whil st eating healthier.A third change that I made was in modifying my food practices arising from the Chinese culture. It dawned on me that Chinese cuisines are usually high in salt due to the salt and soybean sauce combination added into the dish. To ensure that I eat healthier while still satisfying my sensory needs, I created variations like omitting salt if soya sauce is used, using olive oil and different spices. I have also substituted white rice for brown rice for its health benefits and replaced junk food (e.g. chips) with baked nuts (e.g. walnuts).By making such changes in my food choices decisions, it has changed how I view food. I have learnt to appreciate food for their natural taste, am more conscious on what I eat. It has also made it harder for my peers or the media to influence my current palate.Having been to the outskirts in Thailand Chiang Rai, I will be analysing their food practices. In Chiang Rai, there are limited food options for the locals. As supermarkets are usually located in town and there are no public transports uncommitted one would have to drive about an hour to get fresh groceries. Due to these inconveniences, the food options for locals are preserved foods as it is affordable and can be stored longer. In addition to limited food options, the locals are also presented with a reduction in their food choices. As most locals hold manual tote jobs, their food choices were mainly limited to an increased consumption of carbohydrates (e.g. white rice) as it is presumed that higher consumption of carbohydrates will keep one full for prolong hours. It was also hard to incorporate fresh food into their diet as they do not have the appropriate storage place (e.g. fridge) to prevent the food from crook bad.Lastly, the locals at Chiang Rai differs in their cooking practices. The meals prepared are often seasoned either with sugar or salt as they believe that this is the nevertheless bearing to ensure that the meal tasted delicious. After a nalysing their food practices, it can be deduced that their diet resulted from poor accessibility to food choices, awareness on healthy diet, money and the good amenities to store their products. The individuals accessibility to the supermarket is of first importance. The government should target such population and make public transport available. This will allow greater accessibility to other food choices. If creating a public transport route is not feasible, another alternative would be for the supermarkets to offer free delivery services. Not only would this be beneficial to busy working adults, but this will also be of great inspection and repair to elderlies who has decreased strength and mobility and are unable to block heavy groceries home.Of second importance is educating them. When I started making the change, I enriched myself with healthy eating guidelines. Therefore, I believe that with adequate education on how to prepare healthy meals with affordable ingredients and introducing them other natural alternatives that enhances their meals (e.g. herbs and spices) making healthy food choices (e.g. reading food labels) and changing their perceptions (e.g. educate them to choosing high fibre food which can help them to be full easily too) towards food.Making groceries more affordable would be of third importance, supermarkets can consider selling seasonal vegetables and products that are expiring within both months at a cheaper price.Lastly, there could be community funding projects conducted to raise funds for such population to afford a fridge to keep their fresh groceries.

Theories of Motivation for Conflict Management
Theories of indigence for Conflict ManagementCONFLICT MANAGEMENT1.1 Introduction of involvement managementConflict management is a practice that we toilette use to identify and handle conflict sensibly, fairly and efficiently. Since conflict are constantly happen any means, anytime, and anyplace. So it is very distinguished that there are community who understand conflict and know how to solve them. This is important in todays market much than ever. Everyone want to wear a easily place, solid situasion that doesnt fork over any negative conflict to strain them olfactory science more comfortable to throw. But when we listen to soul talk about conflict management, our first idea and the meaning comes to our mind is twainer in organization. Conflict is a natural part of life. Because everyone face their own conflict.Conflict is very hard to avoid when we work with opposite because people pass on always enforce varied viewpoints and perception toward something. The way to handle the conflict determines whether it works and give advantages or disadvantages. It is very hard and re wholey difficult for people to build a strong multitude or group. If we are facing the conflict, we keep choose to dissolve it, complain about it, blame someone for it, or fork over to deal with it through hints and suggestions, or we spate be direct, find out what is going on, and try to reach a resolution through negotiation or compromise. We have to solve the negative conflict and increase the positive conflict , we have to political program everything in former(a) to dealt with this conflict so it is not too easy to get pulled into the argument and create any larger mess. Actually that is depend how team atom going to work with each an other(prenominal), what eccentric of resolution they want to choose. This all about their choice whether they want to move on or unless give up with it.Conflict is not always a bad thing, though. Healthy and positive conf lict is a result of working or team the cooperate well with each other to finish the travail that be given. Conflict always happen because of differences between people that often make discordant teams more effective than those with similar perplex. When people with a differ viewpoints, experiences, skills, ideas and opinions are given a task, a project or challenge, then the combination of the trial can be more effective than any group of similar unmarried could achieve. So, team members must be open to these differences and never let them wage hike and pass a negative conflict.Understanding and appreciating the differences of the viewpoints that involved in conflict are major reason in its resolution. A team member have to develop this skill in order to maintain a positive conflict.According to Kenneth W. Thomas and Ralph H. Kilmann there are five conflict styles we can watch out when the conflict happened and how to resolve to prevent the conflict or make it worse. These five styles are accommodating, avoiding, collaborating, competing, compromising.Well, a accommodating somebody is someone that having high capable to cooperate with their worker. This may be what he want or it opposing with hat he desired and cannot achieve his goal. This will be more effective when the other person recommend it to have better solution. An avoiding of the issue is the better way for person to avoid the conflict. But this styles will not help the team or the person to achieve their goal. But it can help the work become better or hen the person has no chance of winning. The collaborating is the slip where the attraction and the member will cooperate together and make their dream come true. A great collaborating between them maybe help them to gain more benefit. It can be effective using in complex situation. Then the competing, competing is a situation where the leader and member having different opinion and compete with each other to achieve their goal. The person w ill act himself without getting any arrestment from others, this only happen when emergency time or last minute task.Last, compromising, for this situation whether the leader or the members can achieves what they want. This can be a moderate level of cooperation. In this situation, they maybe regard an other solution to achieve as of their important goal.1.2 Scenario of conflict management in groupDuring our group assignment we face a lot of conflict. The most of all, the interpersonal conflict arise in our group. This occurs because we have different view about what should be through. This is because of personality different in group found that it is very difficult to cooperate with each other. saw about personality different, I realize that each of the group member has their own personality, such as quiet person, it is very difficult to deal with this cause of person because it is hard to make them give full attention and cooperation in doing the task, they being silence and l ess giving idea, they was interchangeable avoiding from the task. Not helping other to finish the task well.. Some of the group member, also have a stubborn personality, even very bossy, this make our discussion become difficult because this type of person keep rejecting the idea from others.Apart from that, we also have different perception. Each of us comes from different background, we have different experience and also different education level. This differences cause each of us have our own ideas and way of solving our problem during the task. Different background, our group came from different background because we all conglomerate together, international and local student. It is very difficult to have a conversation amongs us, because we have different slang. Some of the group member have their experience in doing this kind of assignment turn other not. So this make this assignment become difficult to solve when we have different ideas based on the experience we have. Abou t educational level, some of group member very good in academic while some differ, this make the lower one feel discourage and shy to give an idea , this situation become a competing, they will act themselves without getting any agreement from other. this make our group privation of idea and suggestion during the discussion doing the assignment. Not only that, each of group member has conflict within themselves which more known to intrapersonal conflict. This make one individual difficult to give full cooperation in doing our task. For example, a person in group found that it is very difficult to come early for the group brush discussion because they have their problem. They know they should come early but they refuse to come because of the conflict within themselves. Some have personal problem like they dont like one of the group member, this make them feel hesitate to come for meeting. They feel it is very hard to face each other. This make group discussion very difficult to do.W hile doing the task, we found a lot of difficulties. However, we able to manage and put everything in order.Based on the grassroots type of conflict, I found out that our group member face the goal conflict, this happen when our group member coterie their goal and it is imcompatible with each other. Everyone is banding their own goal based on their own desire. So make each group arguing to each other to satisfy their desires and to achieve their goal. overly that, this group also face the affective conflict, I can say this because some of my group member getting angry with other member, this occur when someone in the group did not give full cooperation and not serious with the task that been given, this cause some of member really angry among themselves.Conflict resultant roleHow we managed and resolved our conflict by conflict handling intention. These five type, competing, collaborating, avoiding, accommodating and compromising really happen during the group discussion.Competi ng, each of our group member have their own goal for the task, they have a desires to pursue their personal concern without thinking of other. They participate very eagerly and doing their trump out to make sure the work done fast, they dont consider about others and dont want to accept other opinion. This make the group leader have to set out the the best idea and force the member to vote which idea and suggestion is the best.Collaborating, group member try to work well with other to have full satisfaction of the task. Group member try to accept and try to think the idea and suggestion together, list down the idea and suggestion and agree with it easily.Avoiding, group member try to avoid the conflict to make thing better. They start to ignore and not giving full attention on the task. They ripe simply run away from the difficulty. Then group leader asking the member to listen first, then talk, speak out the. Try to keep the peo ple and problem separately.Accommodating, when the member seeks to satisfy their own interests but neglect it because they concern about others. This make us have to come by paying attention to the important interests that being presented. And last compromising, a group member willing to give up something. They make sure that their good relationships are the first priority and always keep the task in order.when the conflict arise, we use three types of way to prevent the conflict, the first types is trust and communication, this is the greatest way, we can prevent the conflict if the group member are trusting each other, my member tend to be more honest and being open communication among our self, the leader bring forward the member being open in communication so that we all can understand each other more than before.Second , goal structure, goal should be clearly defined and the role plus the contribution of each other must clearly identified, so the leader have made the clear stock, task and goal for each one of the member , so they are aware of their task and try to achieve their own goal and task.Third, by ignoring the conflict, sometimes it is good to just ignore the problem. From leader viewpoint, it is not worth the time to get involve and try solve it, if the problem is too much and we cannot find the solution, so we just try to ignore it and move on to other part.Motivationintroduction of motivationMotivation is used in the workforce not just to attract individuals that organization but to keep them there. One definition of motivation has to do with a set of independent or dependent variables relationship that beg off the direction, amplitude, and persistence of an individuals behaviour, holding constant the effects of amplitude, skills, and understanding of the task, and the constraints operating in the environment. As example, every member of the group must cooperates in generate the idea to make sure that the assignment that is given by lecture can be finished successfullyMotivation results from t he interaction of both conscious and unconscious factors such as the intensity of desire or need, incentive or reward value of the goal, and expectations of the individual and of his and her peers. These factors are the reasons one has for behaving a certain way..2.2 Theories of MotivationCognitive Evaluation theoryThis theory suggests that there are actually cardinal motivation systems, Intrinsic and Extrinsic that form to dickens kinds of motivators that are ingrained and extrinsic motivators. Intrinsic motivators can be as achievement, responsibility and competence, that come from the actual performance of the task or argumentation the intrinsic interest of the work. Other than that, the kind of extrinsic motivator such as pay, promotion, feedback, working conditions and also things that come from a persons environment, and controlled by others. One or the other of these may be a more goodish motivator for a given members. Intrinsically motivated members perform for their ow n achievement and satisfaction. If they come to conceive that they are doing some job because of the pay or the working conditions or some other extrinsic reason, they begin to lose motivation. The belief is that the presence of powerful extrinsic motivators can actually reduce a persons intrinsic motivation, particularly if the extrinsic motivators are perceived by the person to be controlled by people. In other words, a leader who is always dangling this reward or that stick will turn off the intrinsically motivated member.Acquired Needs Theory ( mcclellan)For this theory, some needs as a result of life experiences such as need for achievement, accomplish something difficult. For example, in a group need to do things for themselves to make sure their work done and perfect. Beside that, in a group need for affiliation, from close personal relationships to make rewarded for making friends. Other than that, we also need power and control other. This is able and get what they through controlling others.Expectancy Theory (Vroom)This theory bring together umteen of the elements of previous theories. It is the combination of the perceptual aspects of equity theory with the behavioral aspects of the other theories. Basically, it comes down to this equationM = E*I*VMotivation = Expectancy * Instrumentality * ValenceMotivation is the amount a person will be motivated by the situation they find themselves in. It is a function of the following.Expectancy is which the group of the persons perception that crusade will result in performance. In other words, in the group the persons assessment of the degree to which effort actually correlates with performance. For instrumentation can be perception of the group that performance will be rewarded or punished. The groups assessment of how well the amount of reward correlates with the quality of performance.Valence also can perceive strength of the reward or punishment that will result from the performance of the group. If the reward is small, the motivation will be small, even if expectancy and instrumentality are both perfect.2.3 Types of motivation and scenarioMotivation is the drive or urge that stimulate ones desires and energy in people to be continually interested and committed to a job or a task that is given to them in order to attain a goal. There are two different types of motivation that we can use while progressing to finish our task. That is, Positive Motivation and Negative Motivation.Positive Motivation is the type of motivation that can become our inspired, the drive is put on the member in order to increase the urge. For example, we can give any praise and credit for group member work. As a group leader, she or he should praising group members that are contributing the matter in group. This will encourage them to do more than that. From that, all group member been inspired to give more alternative. Next, all group member should showing their interest in the welfare of other group, This w ill encourage them to contribute and cooperate, they will feel they are considered important.Negative Motivation is the type of motivation, that trigour fear in group members mind. By using this method, our work will done by persuaded negatively instead their own willingness. For example, we can threat group member. Group leader can threat non cooperative members not to be include on the attendance if they keep skipping meetings. Second, group leader will use their power as a leader to influence members to do their assigned jobs by setting rules to those that dont do their work will not be included in the final product.2.4 how to subordinates (job satisfaction/ non-cash incentive)For job satisfaction, there many aspect of this, but all is depending on how each individual feels how this job satisfaction is important. Our goal is to understand the job satisfaction, or how please someone is with their job and sense of achievement they get from doing it. Well, reward and job satisfactio n make us to think about causes for job satisfaction is rewarded to a person while doing their job. From our group assignment, we think about the reward that we will get as a prestige we get for doing a job. For example, we are thinking how the contribution that we give fully in doing the task and feel satisfy with the work and the whole contribution that be pour out. After all the contribution have been given, we will hope for the best result for the task. So this can be a job satisfaction.Jod satisfaction in performance, the relationship between and satisfied a person is with their performance. Giving a good performance sure will give you more satisfaction, so the leader will give an appraisal to boost up the confident level inside the each member . so by this, everyone in the group will being motivated and willing to contribute more on the task.Besides that, non- cash incentive being part of the motivation for the group member, we have to noted that with non-cash incentive reward , each person will doing their job more better , and they get more attracted and hold more to their interest, getting them more excited about the possibilities, and motivating them to act in a way that meets task objective. The non-cash incentive that we do in our group is, after finish the task, we will have a simple and small party. The leader find the best time to gather the group member and having some fun after the task done. This will make them more relaxing and feel excited.ReferencesAnalytictech.com,(2015).Motivation.onlineAvailableathttp//www.analytictech.com/mb021/motivation.htmAccessed 14 Jan. 2015.Cherry,K.(2015).WhatIsMotivation?.onlineAbout.comEducation.Availablehttp//psychology.about.com/od/mindex/g/motivation-definition.htmAccessed 14 Jan. 2015EducationPortal,(2015).WhatIsConflictManagement?Defination,StylesStrategiesEducaionPoronlineAvailableathttp//educationportal.com/academy/lesson/whatisconflictmanagementdefination-styles-strategies.htm1 Accessed 14 Jan 2015.Wrig ht.edu,(2015).ConflictManagementStyleandStrategy.onlineAvailableathttp//www.wright.edu/scott.williams/LeaderLetter/conflict.htm Accessed 14 Jan. 2015.

Reviewing The Tragical History Of Doctor Faustus English Literature Essay
Reviewing The Tragical story Of Doctor Faustus English Literature EssayMy third chapter proposes a threefold analysis of the major characters in The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and The surpass and Margarita. First, by comparing Faustus and Margarita, I show how their soulfulness features as well up as their relationships with the other characters be marked by ele custodyts of feminism, psychoanalysis, metempsychosis hu gentlemanism, affective geography, and role- dramatic event. Then, I put forth a par every last(predicate)el in the midst of Woland and Mephostophilis meant to reveal that-in both literary works-the devils em trunk a necessary evil that rattling reinforces divinity. Last plainly non least, an insight into some of the most significant supernatural episodes of these books shall demonstrate that magical realism and Bakhtins theory of carnival laughter endure readers the Faustian myth with a twist.Margarita and Doctor FaustusStarting from the premise that man is created as Gods reflection, in a twainfold embodiment of the masculine and the feminine normal (Sergei Bulgakov 150), atomic number 53 might easily assume that both The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and The Master and Margarita underline the harmonious union amid male and egg-producing(prenominal) elements-hence Bulgakovs title of his novel and in like manner its dual structure yet instead, nonhing could be farther from the actual ponder of masculine all over feminine aspects in both books. In this sense, feminist critics and theoreticians base their approach to either of these two literary works on issues of gender-segregated societies, appellatives, transgender identity, androgyny, and linguistically codified male discourses. two Marlowes England and Bulgakovs Stalinist Russia ar institutions segregated in legal injury of gender. Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick explains male friendship, mentorship, admiring identification, bureaucratic subordination, and heterosexua l rivalry (quoted in Chedgzoy 247) are all forms of homosociable connections that pervade both Marlowes depend and Bulgakovs novel. Thus, Faustus aspirations are foreshadowed at the beginning of the dissolution when he fantasizes rough exotic sites, colonial exploitation (attributed to men exclusively), and violent ambitions Ay, these are those that Faustus most desires. / O, what a world of profit and delight, / Of indicator, of honour, of omnipotence (Marlowe 52). Faustus deems knowledge the way to gain power. His is non a singular view rather, it settles the exponent of Marlowes epoch according to historians during those times, this segregation extends even to theatres where actresses are not admitted and universities where men alone are granted access. Bulgakovs work of fiction account for a role reversal, although the circumstances are somewhat similar. Margarita-the womanish Faustus of the twentieth coke and therefore the one who assumes a anti-hegemonic role-is swept off her feet by the Master, a God-like figure who is not satisfied with writing intimately Yeshua (hence the identification with the latter that confers him comprehend authority) but carries his artistic mission however, which acquires metaphysical connotations. The Master remains unnamed and thus represents a universal symbol of Bulgakovs literary times. He is the exponent of one of the major Moscow literary associations, called Massolit (Bulgakov 11) that rarely if ever includes women writers among its members. Even if this is the case, women are belittled twice first rejected as writers or second fiercely censored by the state.Feminists seek to rebel against such a misogynistic structure of masculinity they find the key figures to do that in exactly the aforementioned(prenominal) female characters who are initially submissive and oppressed. Both Margarita and Helen of troy disrupt the authoritative discourse of masculinity. On the one hand, the second part of Bulgakovs novel casts away the Master and brings into focus the beautiful Margarita She was beautiful and intelligent. () m some(prenominal) women would accommodate given anything to exchange their lives for the life of Margarita Nikolaevna (Bulgakov 166). She is now the active protagonist, whereas the Master is the passive one. She is willing to sacrifice body and soul in the name of love, acknowledging her role entirely. On the other hand, Marlowes tragedy depicts Helen as the demolisher of masculine power her name Helen may be read as made up of the core Hel (referring to hell and destruction) and the particle -en. That is why Helens image is associated with the downfall of Troy but also of Faustus and Wittenberg here.Further much, an equally significant element that brings slightly the subversion of masculine authority is love. Both Faustus and the Master wholeness-mindedly surrender to their mistresses, although this aspect is more obvious at Marlowe. In Bulgakovs book, the Master owes Ma rgarita his salvation and recuperation, whereas in Marlowes tragedy, the play of significances has a greater depth. Doctor Faustus and Helen engage in an androgynous role-play he plays Semele and Paris I will be Paris, and for love of thee / Instead of Troy shall Wittenberg be sackd, / () When he appeard to hapless Semele (Marlowe 106), while Helen assumes the prototype of feminine beauty but also the role of Jupiter Brighter art thou than flaming Jupiter (106). A a couple of(prenominal) lines afterwards, by being associated with Eve, Faustus becomes aware of his sin but he is also left with an undermined masculinity that tempted Eve may be saved, but not Faustus (108).In The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and The Master and Margarita alike, even episodic characters or those of lesser importance see women only as a medium of power, as objects rather than agents. Hence Valdes ironic observation Sometimes like women or unwedded maids, / Shadowing more beauty in their airy brows / Than in the sinlessness breasts of the queen of love (Marlowe 54) or Robins declamatory legerdemain Ay, there be of us here that have waded as deep into / matters as other men (73). Mephostophilis himself turns the concept of marriage into an antisocial act beca example he offers Faustus a devil disguised as woman instead of a wife. Bulgakovs text describes the meeting between Azazello and Margarita on which occasion the former reckons that women are superficial beings saying ironically Difficult folk, these women (174). Another character, Hella-Wolands maidservant-is analogised to Helen of Troy with her name (note the particle Hell) she represents the feminine stance of Hell.Twentieth century feminists fight against such patriarchal empowerment. This is the case of Helene Cixous who upholds the idea that gender relations are inscribed in the language we use. Consequently, Cixous turns the invisibility of women stomach against men, who become the other of the other and hence a re cancelled out (Hedges 106). Following in the same line, Luce Irigaray argues that man obliterate differences between them and women as a result of their belief that women represent their reflected opposites therefore, womens otherness is denied (Hedges 105-6).Additionally, the two protagonists of these literary works are crosstieed by features of humanism. Doctor Faustus definitely embodies the exponent of the perfectible man of the Renaissance whose intellectual curiosity, aspiration for power, and nationalism are expressed rhetorically in the first person singular Ill have them () / Ill charge () / Ill make () (Marlowe 53). In this respect, Faustus is an overreacher according to Harry Levin as he reaches out to the unconscious, to supernatural forces that might help him remedy the intellectual bases of his age which he perceives as faulty (quoted in Mitchell 55). Although he aims to gain fame through his powers and he aspires to be more than a man, he is permanently haunted b y an aflutter consciousness hence the opposition between the Good and the Bad Angels but also the Seven Deadly Sins that reveal the scholars inner flaws. Margarita too is a exemplification of twentieth century humanism. She does not seek to gain power through knowledge but through love. Similarly, her being an overreacher is evident in the desire to look wise environments and her acceptance to obey occult forces.Marlowes Faustus and Bulgakovs Margarita are both folk protagonists since they are considered dissidents of their times, in spite the fact that their endeavours target very distinct goals. capital of Minnesota de Man describes this type of character as the one whose path is strewn with those parts of himself that he had to abandon in the process of his own becoming (398). Faustus symbolizes the opposition brought about by the protestant belief that every individual is responsible for his / her own salvation or damnation. Margarita denotes the opposition against the rigid lesson and social rules dictated by the communist regime. The scholars unorthodox practices and his extended travels shed light on the ultimate results which he bargains for knowledge, fame, and control over other cultures, whereas Margaritas is a more limited aim-she is not at all domineering (although she is appointed queen for a night) but looks for affective fulfillment. However, these central characters are brought together by the development of all their individual possibilities, so that, by being put to test in the world, they might penetrate, come to know, and dominate reality (Lukacs quoted in Hedges 92). Faustus and Margaritas personalities extend to more than their individual scope, they represent a literary reaction to the ardent issues of their times. Moreover, these protagonists are depicted as torn between their affective and their intellectual make-up all throughout the texts. Obviously, the combo of emotion and reason is more more stringent in Faustus case the os cillation between enjoying life and attaining knowledge reveals that for the scholar, the body is more important than the soul, as he himself puts it This word damnation terrifies not him (Marlowe 58). Nevertheless, Faustus existence stands not under the sign of eros, (like Margaritas does) but of thanatos (Hermand quoted in Hedges 94)-since his quest leads to death whereas Margaritas grants her access to atemporal bliss.Ultimately, the crook of Marlowes and Bulgakovs central characters is informed by the setting where they are portrayed. Garrett A. Sullivan, Jr. speaks about an affective geography (231)-for instance Faustus study or the Master and Margaritas rented apartment-that shapes the protagonists identity. He tho explains that the notion of geography is defined as a conceptual structure through which social and spatial relations are simultaneously materialised and represented (Sullivan 236). In these two literary works, there exists a cyclic sequence of broadness and enclo sure. We find Faustus alone in his study both at the beginning and in the end of the play, although he travels extensively during the twenty-four years of the pact, while Margarita swings between the remoteness of her Masters apartment-A completely private little apartment, plus a battlefront hall with a sink in it, little windows exclusively level with the paved walk leading from the gate (Bulgakov 109)-Moscows expansiveness, and the seclusion of their dateless refuge. Thus, the relationship space-identity acquires new dimensions locations become part of the characters emotional make-up The axis mundi passes through Faustuss Wittenberg study and the Muscovite abode on it lie Heaven and Hell (Kott quoted in Sullivan 240).Overall, Marlowes play and Bulgakovs prose present two multidimensional characters who-if carefully analysed-are more similar than different in terms of questioning patriarchal discourses through feminist techniques, in terms of revealing humanistic features, and in terms of attaching emotional connotations to their setting or background. The Evil SuiteThe archetype of the dichotomy good-evil permeates human discourses as well as literary creations since the beginning of time. Evil has forever been opposed to and traditionally vanquished by good forces, regardless of the culture adopting this model. Nonetheless, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus as well as The Master and Margarita put forth an innovative perspective not only does evil stem from good, but it also reinforces divine laws and teaches moral lessons. Both Christopher Marlowe and Mikhail Bulgakov deal with metaphysical issues in their works, issues that question the relationship between Heaven and Hell and Gods intervention in humans lives at the same time. In this context, Wolands subject in Moscow and Mephostophilis in Faustus study foreshadow the obvious unearthly themes whose manifold interpretations are disclosed in these two works. Wolands mission is to point to the mor al collapse of the Stalinist 1930s Moscow through the use of satire and supernatural whereas Mephostophilis task is more limited in scope because it refers to a single individual, Doctor Faustus. However, both demons appear as God-sent messengers swinging between Heaven, earth, and Hell.In Marlowes tragedy but also in Bulgakovs novel, the forces of good and evil are not in competition but coexist on more or less equal terms (225) as Laura D. Weeks tells us in her article Hebraical Antecedents in The Master and Margarita Woland and Company Revisited. The black magic professor, Woland seems inseparably united with God even from the very beginning of the novel, when the motto taken from Goethe exposes this timeless link I am part of that power which eternally wills evil and eternally works good (Bulgakov 11). The same may be said about Mephostophilis who-when asked about his origins-replies FAU. Was not that Lucifer an angel once? / MEPH. Yes, Faustus, and most dearly lovd of God. () FAU. And what are you that live with Lucifer? / MEPH. Unhappy spirits that fell with Lucifer (Marlowe 59). Thus, Woland appears as an intricate and profound character while Mephosto is less thoughtful and more servile.Additionally, having the status of Gods opposites, the two devils very strengthen His goodness and prove once more that they are His envoys. In Bulgakovs novel, Woland claims to have been an incognito observer of Yeshuas trial it is paradoxical how-by recounting this first installment to Berlioz and Ivan Homeless-Woland in fact reasserts Gods existence theres no need for any points of view, the strange professor replied, he simply existed, thats all (Bulgakov 18). Likewise, Mephostophilis reconfirms the divine authority when he admits his origins and confesses the sin of having Conspird against our God with Lucifer (my emphasis, Marlowe 59).Moreover, both Woland and Mephostophilis have immense powers, yet they are aware these are limited in comparison to Gods. For i nstance, when Margarita asks that Frieda be forgiven, Satan admits Each department must look after its own affairs. I dont turn down our possibilities are rather great, () But there is simply no sense in doing what ought to be done by another as I just put it department (Bulgakov 216). Mephosto similarly gives away his limitations when he refuses to tell Faustus who has created the world Now tell me who made the world. / MEPH. I will not (Marlowe 69) or during all the episodes when he urges the scholar to renew his bond for fear Faustus might be forgiven by God.However, in their attempt to attest Gods existence, both Marlowes and Bulgakovs demons actually want to restore theirs. Wolands and Mephostophilis is a peculiar status since they seem to embody both good and evil. On the occasion of the Great Ball when Woland is willing to grant Margarita a wish, the power of mercy surfaces I am talking about mercy, Woland explained his words, () It sometimes creeps, quite unexpectedly an d perfidiously, through the narrowest cracks. And so I am talking about rags (Bulgakov 216). Mephostophilis does not mention mercy but regret and despair when he contemplates his everlasting doom in Hell Thinkst thou that I, who saw the face of God / And tasted the eternal joys of heaven, / Am not tormented with ten thousand hells / In being deprivd of everlasting bliss? (Marlowe 59) or when he advises the scholar O Faustus, leave these dizzy demands, / Which strike a terror to my fainting soul (ibidem). Under these circumstances, there arise questions about the ambiguous, opposites-marked personalities of Woland and Mephosto Radha Balasubramanian further explains the two literary workscomplicate the matter further by concentrating on the nature of the Devil, raising questions as to who the Devil is, and how he came out being angelic. He is a wanderer, without a name and without a syndicate? Does he also resemble God? Are they the same? Do devils exist as a contrast to God? Are th ey two sides of the same coin? (1995 41)Therefore, besides the dominant feature of demonism, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and The Master and Margarita endow their devils characters with versatile attributes. The demons incorporate multiple valid truths (Emerson 179), acting as coordinators and bridging the different plans of the two books. In so doing, Woland and Mephosto bring about a multiplicity of perspectives and remind the reader of Mikhail Bakhtins heteroglossia, although Marlowes devil is less distant than Bulgakovs Except when he is the mouthpiece for an installment of Christs Passion, Woland is a taciturn man. This is appropriate. He shows rather than tells (Emerson 179).Another equally significant aspect is related to the parallel that the two authors draw between devils and religion. Hence, the satire of the Stalinist Moscows society is acquired through a review of the Yershalaim narrative. The same may be averred about a satire of Catholicism at Marlowe throug h a post-Reformation approach. Whereas the parallel between Wolands visit in Moscow and Yeshuas Passions in Yershalaim indicates time condensation-Moscows literary time became a mythical time that can be structurally correlated with the mythical dimension in the Yershalaim chapters (Balasubramanian, 2001 90)-there is no such analogy or time contraction in Marlowes tragedy. Instead, the dramaturge describes the meeting between Faustus, Mephosto, and the pontiff as the only occasion when the Pope is punished by the devil. In this way, Catholicism is downplayed as the Pope is mocked for failing to exorcize the troublesome ghost (Marlowe 83). Here, spiritual dissidence is also backed up by newly emergent ideas of predestination and original sin as advocated by the Elizabethan church. By opposition, the sole religious dispute occurs in the incipit of Bulgakovs novel between Ivan Homeless, Berlioz, and Woland.Furthermore, there are additional thought-provoking implications that seem to pervade only Bulgakovs novel but not Marlowes play. For instance, original scholars question the source and the narrator of the novel at the same time, attributing these alternatively to Bulgakov, the Master, the Devil, or God (Balasubramanian, 1995 44). It is evident that endowing Woland with the premise of authorship is an idea reminiscent of Bulgakov himself who has primitively planned his novel as a Gospel According to the Devil (Emerson 178). In this respect, Christs story is defamiliarized by transposing narrative points of view from the apostles to the devil (Balasubramanian, 1995 44)-the habitual Christian cognition is disrupted and the gospel acquires novel undertones. In general, good and evil are the inseparable components of the human nature differentiated only by mans free will. There is no preeminence of evil over good, although there can be no good without evil Kindly consider the question what would your good do if evil did not exist, and what would the earth look like if shadows disappeared from it? (Bulgakov 274). By this account, both Woland and Mephostophilis appear as the most reliable source of knowledge in these two literary works but equally as troubled allies of God.Supernatural EncountersAt the beginning of the nineteenth century, E. T. A. Hoffmann-a leading representative of German Romanticism-uses the fantasy genre with macabre undertones in combination with realism. A century later, the theoretician Mikhail Bakhtin defines his work as a Menippean satire, fundamentally satirical or mocking in nature and seeking to ridicule different intellectual attitudes and philosophical postures (Cuddon 504). The two literary works herein under scrutiny draw on the family unit of supernatural and on comedy to give the Faustian myth a twist, although humour serves distinct purposes in The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and The Master and Margarita. The use of humour and farce in the two books is treated differently by critics. On the one han d, in Marlowes play, the comic scenes have not received that much critical consideration over the years. One reason for this aspect might be the fact that there is still ardent debate nowadays over the authorship of these comic scenes There is almost unanimous agreement that the scenes of clownage () and the comic scenes at the papal, imperial, and ducal courts (Jump 22) are not Marlowes but someone elses-hence the variation in length and style between the A-version (1604) and the B-version of the text (1616). Regardless of their origin, humourous scenes do permeate Marlowes play. On the other hand, Bulgakovs comedy episodes have been the focus of much more critical interpretation due to the conviction that, in this case, Bulgakov himself is the author of these scenes. Bulgakovs fiction does not employ humour and pranks only for the sake of comic relief but also to underscore a deeper connotation the Stalinist Moscows small-mindedness, gluttony, and moral degradation.Certain comment ators such as Marie-Hlne Besnault in Belief and Spectacle at betimes Performances of Doctor Faustus (2009) separate humourous episodes into low-comedy and clowning scenes (19). The former category occur in Vatican and at Charles-the German Emperors-court, have Faustus as protagonist, depict people pertaining to the social elite, and are further divided into sub-scenes with a larger number of characters (Besnault 19-20) dukes, attendants, cardinals, and others. The most relevant instances of low-comedy scenes centre on the moments when Faustus and Mephosto steal the Popes food or beat up the friars POPE. How now Who snatchd the meat from me? / POPE. My wine gone too? Ye lubbers, look about (Marlowe 82).By opposition, the protagonists of the clowning scenes are Robin, Dick, the horse-courser and their suite (in fact, all of them embodying archetypes of clowns), although the main topic of intelligence remains Faustus. Besides, these episodes have a less intricate course of events as well as an equally uncomplicated spatial and temporal frame. Examples that best expand this case present Faustus tricking the horse-courser or Robin and Dick being changed to animals For apish deeds transformed to an ape. / MEPH. And so thou shalt be thou transformed to a dog, and carry him upon thy back. Away, be gone (Marlowe 85).Similarly to Marlowes low-comedy that parallels the major events of the play, Bulgakovs novel contains buffoonery scenes meant to counterpoint the main plot. For instance, Natashas metamorphosis into a witch parallels Margaritas Completely naked, her dishevelled haircloth flying in the air, she flew astride a fat hog, who was clutching a briefcase in his front hoofs, while his hind hoofs desperately threshed the air (Bulgakov 185). Then, there is also the rest between Behemoths noble-like manners and Wolands aristocratic personality There was now a white bow-tie on the cats neck, and a pair of ladies mother-of-pearl opera glasses hung from a strap on h is neck. Whats more, the cats whiskers were gilded (Bulgakov 195).Both Marlowes tragedy and Bulgakovs narrative dwell on the connection between belief and disbelief when presenting supernatural occurrences. T. S. Coleridges willing suspension of disbelief (Biographia Literaria, 1817) justifies the emergence of supernatural, seemingly inexplicable actions in a literary work. Thus, despite being taken aback by multiple peculiar(a)ordinary, weird events, the readers of these two books are willing to believe and acknowledge such scenes as literary conventions. Berliozs severed head as predicted by Woland, Behemoth traveling by tram with a paid ticket, Faustus invocation of Alexander the Great, or Wagners summoning devils are all examples that illustrate the abovementioned hypothesis. Unlike Bulgakovs fiction however, Marlowes play draws on an extra element which reinforces the suspension of disbelief (ibidem), namely the fact that the comic scenes seem open to further editing, alterat ions, or adjustments according to the taste of the audience who watches the performance of the play onstage.Additionally, magical realism informs The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and The Master and Margarita alike. In The Penguin Dictionary of Literary Terms and Literary Theory (1998), J. A. Cuddon enumerates some of the key aspects which condition this literary trendSome of the characteristic features of this kind of fiction are the mingling and juxtaposition of the realistic and the fantastic or bizarre, skillful time shifts, convolute and even labyrinthine narratives and plots, miscellaneous use of dreams, myths and fairy stories, expressionistic and even surrealistic description, arcane erudition, the element of surprise or abrupt shock, the horrific and the inexplicable. (488)In the two literary works analysed here magical realism establishes a link between the books reality and a mythological, distant past. In this way, supernatural episodes are bordered by easily reco gnisable locations and characters that offer readers a dose of certainty. Behemoth alludes to Charles Perraults story The Booted Cat (1697) when he claims A cat is not supposed to wear trousers, Messire, the cat replied with great dignity. Youre not going to tell me to wear boots, too, are you? (Bulgakov 195). Koroviev himself hints at various titles as he walks pass the Griboedov mansion and a sweet awe creeps into ones heart at the thought that in this house there is now ripening the future author of a Don Quixote or a Faust, or, devil take me, a Dead Souls. Eh? (268).Furthermore, humour at Marlowe and Bulgakov is not exclusively employed for purposes of comic relief during moments aerated with narrative or dramatic tension. Rather, it also mocks, it satirizes individual and social flaws, being marked by ironic undertones. In Bulgakovs novel, the fascination with the folkloric, the demonic and the grotesque (Jones 27) actually indicates a satire of the Stalinist society that has discarded individual reliability and awareness. In this situation, the mockery seems to be directed especially towards people of the artistic orbit writers, critics, or theatre employees. By comparison, in Marlowes dramatic work readers come across entertaining episodes fraught by sinister underpinnings-for example, Robin and Dicks metamorphoses in animals scoffing the degradation of the human nature, its reduction to primeval instincts. Moreover, Mikhail Bakhtins theory of carnival laughter may be applied to both Marlowes play and Bulgakovs narrative. In the article authorise Carnival and Comedy On Bakhtins Misreading of Boccaccio, Adrian Stevens explains that For Bakhtin, carnival is a manifestation of folk laughter it embodies a folk based culture defined by its antipathy to the official and hierarchical structures of everyday, noncarnival life (1). Bakhtin believes that carnivals influence the various types of comic works in literature by deferring daily constraints and thus l iberating humans and also by bringing opposites together. In Bulgakovs and Marlowes books comic scenes unite masters and servants (Faustus and Mephosto-Wagner and his suite Margarita-Natasha Woland-his retinue), the righteous and the sinful (Yeshua-Woland Pope-Mephosto Good Angel-Bad Angel) but equally the wise and the fool (Faustus-Benvolio the Master-Ivan Homeless). On the whole, the third chapter of my paper has shown how the personalities of the protagonists in The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus and The Master and Margarita are shaped by elements of feminism, humanism, and affective geography. Afterwards, I have compared the evil entourages in these two works only to reveal that Woland and Mephostophilis are an integrant part of goodness. Finally, by contrasting the supernatural and the comic episodes in Marlowes play and in Bulgakovs novel, I have exposed the fact that humour may acquire deeper implications besides the visible comic relief at the surface.

Humorous Wedding Speech Given by a Friend from Work :: Wedding Toasts Roasts Speeches
Humorous Wedding Speech Given by a plugger from WorkLadies and gentlemen, thank you. And, on behalf of the bridesmaids, Id like to thank Anthony for his kind words. I certainly agree that they did a great job today. And as for the rest of his speech, I always knew hed be hard to follow but I didnt expect an unintelligible, mumbled noise. Oh well, it only goes to show that middling when you think you know someone well, they go and surprise you. But in fact, I havent known Anthony for all that long. Anthony and I actually met well-nigh six years ago when we were working for the same company. In fact, its preferably amazing that we have become such good friends, given the comparatively few occasions back then that he actually bothered to turn up to work at all. But good friends or not, I do have a theory as to why hes chosen me to be his best man and not one of his senior friends. If you ask me, its because he didnt want a best man whod be able to tell you about all the embarrass mishaps and misdemeanors of his youth. Like the time, aged 15, that he was invited round to have tea with his first girlfriends parents and managed to walk dog poo across their new living populate carpet. I always thought that pale cream was an impractical colour for carpet. And, after that, afternoon, so did Sarah Baileys parents. And unfortunately for Anthony, Sarah herself found him to be a rather impractical boyfriend. And so that was the end of that. And Im sure his choice of best man was similarly influenced by a desire to keep to a lower place wraps the post-A-level pub crawl that led to him spending a night in the cells after vomiting off a bridge onto the bonnet of a firing police car. Anthony, I hope you now see that it was neer going to be that easy which brings me onto your stag night. Now, the men in the room will be aware of what goes on at a stag do and Anthonys was certainly no different. We did all the usual things museums, a cream tea, a classical design and a trip to the theatre were not amongst them. But considering there were 12 lads hell-bent on giving him a night hed never forget - but probably rather would forget if theyd got their way I think I did a pretty good job of smell after him.

Tom Clancy Essay -- Essays Papers
Tom ClancyWhen choosing an author for my paper, I chose international suspense because I am very interested in distant relations and the engine room of modern day war. I have read stories by Edgar Allen Poe, with suspense and vivid imagery, which reminded me of Clancys work. I decided to choose Tom Clancy because of his gift to weave such realistic tales of international suspense. Clancy creates the scenes in his books with such detail, it makes the reader feel like he/she is in that location. My first choice for this paper was Dr. Suess, but because he has passed away, I had to keep looking. I knew very little information about my author before writing this paper. I had read two of his books, but had no real knowledge of his personal life or past history. Tom Clancy, a successful American author of international suspense, has captured his love of military and technology and profitably employed it in the books he writes. The life of Thomas L. Clancy Jr. started like any oth er, but changed with the success of his work. He was born the year 1947, in the City of Baltimore, Maryland. His father was a postal carrier and also a store credit employer (Speace 98). Clancy spent his life educated in only Catholic schools. Because of this Clancy says, I was never swept up in the drugs or music(Cohen 2). He attended Loyola College in Baltimore Maryland, and earned a degree in face (Speace 98). At that time, Clancy then tried to enlist in the army. He was excused though, because of a case of myopia. I thought I would have made a good tank commander(Speace 99) , said Clancy, whose childhood dreams had been broken when he was kept from entering into the military. He then took on a career as an insurance agent in Baltimore Maryland, and kept that job until around 1973 (Speace 98). He then became a business owner from 1973 to the year 1980. In 1969, Clancy married a woman named Wanda Thomas, who was an eye surgeon and an insurance agency manager (Speace 98) . They had four children, Michelle, Christine, Tom, and Kathleen, and a dog named Freddie (Cohen 115). They lived on 400 wooded acres in Maryland, on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay. Standing on the front lawn is a tank, given to him as a gift by his wife at the time (Schindehette 114). On the property there are also two tennis courts, two basketball courts, a full length football field and... ... go of your dreams when there are obstacles in the way.Works CitedSpeace, Geri.
